Using Dry Shampoo: Extend Your Wash, Freshen and Volumize Your Locks

Jaclyn Harwell October 31, 2016

Using dry shampoo can help to extend the time between washes, which promotes hair health and growth. Not only that, but the right dry shampoo can even even freshen and volumize your hair. We may be all about natural beauty and hair care, but your hair can still be pretty and smell nice, even if you’re committed to using natural products!

Contributor Jaclyn tells us about a lovely dry shampoo in this post sponsored by Aspen Herbals.

I like to joke about being a beauty school dropout (that’s just my musical geek coming out- someone else please tell me you were also into Grease in high school!), but I actually DID go to beauty school, and I actually WAS a hairstylist. My chemical-laden hair care career is in the past now, though, and I’m committed to only using natural products on my locks.

The funny thing is, even when I was in beauty school, surrounded by hair chemicals, I rarely washed my hair. At the time, I didn’t know a thing about healthy or natural living, but I did understand one thing: extending the time between shampooing my hair helped keep it healthier and looking good.

Now, I’ve never been one to get very greasy hair (my hair and skin tend to be on the drier side), so I could get away with going longer between washes than most girls, BUT, when it did begin to get… let’s just say, questionable, I was always on the lookout for ways to freshen it up without having to do the whole shampoo and blow dry song and dance. I wish I had known about using dry shampoo.

I laugh now, because when I was a young woman in beauty school, I had lots of time to myself. Now I’m a busy mom of four boys. Spending hours on a beauty routine is a thing of the past. And actually washing and blow-drying my hair? That’s a luxury I don’t get very often.

How Often Should You Shampoo Your Hair?

I don’t remember ever washing my hair every day. I’ve never really needed to. But there was a time when I purposefully and distinctfully chose to go even longer between washes.

Going longer between washes:

  • allows your hair time to rest from products (both shampoo and styling products)
  • encourages your hair to regulate its natural oil production mechanism: not too much, not too little
  • saves money (less frequent use of products)
  • saves time (a precious commodity for busy moms!)

When I decided to extend the time between washes, my hair did go through a bit of a detox as it adjusted to being left to its own natural devices. I found that it was important to use something to freshen it up and absorb excess oils during this time.

I think the ideal amount of washing varies for everyone, depending on skin and hair type, texture, and so forth, but at this time, I only wash my hair about once a week (sometimes less). I think washing your hair as infrequently as you can get away with is great!

If you have oily hair naturally, you may think there’s no way you can go longer between washes. That’s why you need a secret weapon.

How Using Dry Shampoo Can Extend Time Between Washes + Freshen and Volumize Your Hair

Dry shampoo is the secret weapon you need to keep your hair fresh between washes and is the perfect tool for busy mamas!

That’s why Aspen Herbals Organic Dry Shampoo is perfect for conscientious mamas who want to feel pretty but still be mindful of the products they use. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything herbal. The earthy, herb-y smell is the most relaxing thing in the world to me. If it can make my hair look pretty and mellow me out, I’m sold.

Aspen Herbals Organic Cocoa Earth Dry Shampoo:

  • Absorbs excess oil
  • Adds volume
  • Is perfect for taking on trips (and meets TSA standards)
  • Uses natural plant-based ingredients to promote healthier hair
  • Is easy to take along on camping trips, to the gym, hiking, beach days or everyday use
  • Is ideal for busy mamas who just need to go one.more.day between washes!

Coco Earth Dry Shampoo can be used on clean hair to add volume and achieve a sexy tousled hair style, or prolong the time between blowouts and styling by absorbing oil and adding volume.

  1. Kate,
I would love to start using dry shampoo in my family but I have heard that using dry shampoo for to long can make your face… get really red and irritated and sluff off. Is this something you have found to be true at times?

I’m Kate, mama to 5 and wife to Ben.  I love meeting new people and hearing their stories.  I’m also a big fan of “fancy” drinks (anything but plain water counts as ‘fancy’ in my world!) and I can’t stop myself from DIY-ing everything.  I sure hope you’ll stick around so I can get to know you better!
