Guest Post: Natural Family Planning

Today we have a guest post from Kaitlin Carruth, a student who is studying (and sharing with us) about Natural Family Planning!

Looking for a “greener” method for family planning? Tired of birth control pills? Ready to understand your body and cycle better? If you said yes to any of the above questions then please read on!

Women have natural means to know when they are fertile and infertile. Specifically, by checking cervical secretions and charting the observations every day, a woman can take control and understand her cycle. This is called the Creighton Method and it is even effective for women with abnormal menstrual cycles. Trained practitioners at FertilityCare Centers teach the method and help couples monitor the results of their charting. It is a safe and natural way to both achieve and prevent pregnancy

But you don’t have to take my word for it. Check out the following testimonial of Sarah from Missouri, a current participant in an international Creighton Model study:

“I had been on birth control since my teenage years because of issues with my menstrual cycle (irregular, heavy bleeding, unbearable cramping, mood swings, etc) and I had seen a lot of the side effects it had on my body. As we began looking into it, we learned that using the Creighton Model would help me figure out some of my female issues as well as provide a way to avoid pregnancy. I quickly realized that birth control was just a band-aid solution. Through learning to chart from a nurse (and having a good doctor), we would be able to figure out exactly where the issues stem from so we can fix it naturally rather than putting synthetic hormones into my body. My husband and I started learning the Creighton Model a few months before our wedding and it was not hard, it’s just a commitment. We always felt extremely supported! We couldn’t be happier knowing that we are preventing pregnancy naturally and when the time comes for us to have children, we are confident that this model will help us achieve pregnancy just as easily as we were able to prevent it. Being a part of the CEIBA study is very important to us, as well. We want to show others that Natural Family Planning is a healthy and effective way to avoid pregnancy. We just wish that more people knew about it!”

We used Natural Family Planning and it was such a blessing. How wonderful to have your husband (and you) understand your body better and to see the amazing way that God has put us together. And also how good not to put artificial chemicals into our bodies that wreak havoc on them later.

    Thanks for the post.

  2. As an NFP instructor and a nutritional counselor, I've used NFP with many clients to help aid in conception or to help delay a pregnancy when there was a need. Though my husband and I don't use it ourselves right now (we don't have a need to delay pregnancy) I've seen it help many people conceive or identify underlying health problems.

In my experience, NFP is definitely effective both for conceiving and delaying, and statistics show it is beneficial to marriages and it doesn't harm the environment or the woman's body!

It's so GREAT to see that you've posted about Natural Family Planning! My husband and I use the Creighton Model, too. Creighton Model doctors have done wondrous things for women who have been having fertility problems, too… and it's all done NATURALLY. Good bye, birth control! Good riddance! I just wish more people knew about this method. Thanks for spreading the good news!

Thank you for posting this! There is such a need in our society to spread the news of the Creighton Model, for many reasons. My husband and I have been using it for all 4 years of our marriage. I have also now become certified to teach the Creighton Model. I have seen it help many couples who are struggling with infertility, women with menstrual issues, and I have also seen couples use it to effectively avoid pregnancy while enhancing their marriages. It is a wonderful blessing and thank you for spreading the news!

Using the Creighton Model for almost 19 years now, to avoid and achieve pregnancy. It is certainly a wonderful tool to know your body and be aware of any changes. I am peri-menopausal now and am so grateful for a method which works with my natural cycle. I know if I need hormone therapy in the future that I will have what I truly need, not what some drug company tells my doctor to prescribe. I only wish more people would learn about it sooner and not believe all the negative press NFP methods get! The Creighton model's not a contraceptive but a true means of improving women's health!

Got something to say? Go for it!
