Giveaway: Your Blogging Business

Do you own a small business?  Perhaps you’re a blogger, like me.  Or perhaps you’re a WAHM who makes crafts or diapers or soaps (if you are…email me!  We need to talk).  Maybe you own an in-home daycare.  Maybe you tutor on the side.

Whatever it is, it’s a business.  And if you earn money on it, then you have to pay taxes on it.  Argh.  Nobody likes taxes!

This is primarily because no one likes to part with their hard-earned money.  But it’s also because taxes are so darn confusing.  I remember looking at all the tax forms the first year I was teaching private music lessons and seeing terms like “schedule C,” “golden parachute” and a lot of other weird things.  I can figure out a 1040 EZ (barely) but anything more than that and I’m lost.

To remedy the problem, I’ve hired a CPA the last few years to do my taxes for me.  He does the work, and just in case there’s a problem (read: I get audited), he handles it.  But, it’s not cheap.  Not everyone can afford to do it, and probably not everyone wants to do it, especially if your business is making $500 a year.  Do you want to pay someone most or all of that money to do your taxes?  No way.

That’s where this new book comes in.

Your Blogging Business: Tax Talk and Tips from a Bookkeeper Turned Blogger, by Nikki Hughes, is a new tax guide for small businesses.  It explains what the tax forms are, how to fill them out, the nuances of bookkeeping (keeping all your records straight) so that you can do your own taxes, and do them right.

If you’re confused, Nikki’s practical guide and experience as a tax professional will help you figure out all the “boring” parts of the business so that everything is streamlined, under control, and no big deal!

I think it looks like a great book! I think “Section II: The bookkeeping side of things” would be most helpful to me – I need to read these parts: “Introduction to bookkeeping” and “You know what you need to track so how do you track it?”

Great book, not relevant at all to me, but if you were to ever put out an e-book on how to make money on your blog, I’d buy it! :)

I guess just the whole thing, as I have thought about blogging & if I would have to claim taxes, etc. So this would be a very good resource to have!

Oh, I think the Tax Side of Things is going to be the most helpful for me. Dealing with doing taxes correctly is the biggest thing making me nervous about opening my handmade diaper business!

All of it would be very useful but, I’d have to say the “Income and deductions” section would probably be the most helpful.

All of it! It all looks like a great introduction to what would be involved. Blogging is something I’d considered for some time, but hadn’t done because all those business details seem a bit daunting!
