This month we’re doing a series of Real Food Confessions. Lest you think us real food bloggers are perfect…we’re proving otherwise! Today we have Jill, editor from the BRAND NEW Modern Alternative Kitchen! Today is launch day, so after you read this, head over there to check it out!
How “into” real food are you? (how long have you been doing it, how many different foods do you make from scratch, etc.)
I first started paying attention to the foods we eat in 2009 when I met my (now) husband. He was a fan of Dr. Joseph Mercola, and I began doing some of my own research and making small changes. After we were married, I started to notice how certain foods were wreaking havoc on our bodies, and when I decided to find out why, I stumbled onto Modern Alternative Mama and Weston A. Price and started making bigger changes. For almost a year now, we have been gradually making the changes to a real food lifestyle and have noticed drastic changes including weight loss, sleeping better, clearer skin, stronger hair/nails, and more energy. I have always loved cooking, ever since I was young, so I enjoy making our food from scratch! I make butter, bread/muffins (when we eat it, which isn’t often), broths, yogurt, salad dressings, marinades, and rubs.
What is one food you just can’t make yourself? (even if you’ve tried a lot…!)
I faced some real challenges the first time I tried to brew kombucha, but I think I finally figured it out!
How much of what your family eats is *really* homemade? (vs. storebought, restaurants, etc.)
We try to follow the 90/10 rule. We eat at home all but two meals each week-one dinner for date night and one other at our discretion (often our church group potluck or lunch after church with friends). I would guess about 95% of what we eat at home is homemade and/or real food. We mainly eat organic fruits and veggies, grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured chicken and eggs, raw milk/ cheese/butter/cream, and occasionally we will eat whole grains, though for the most part we are grain-free. Some items I still purchase from the grocery store that I don’t make (yet!) from scratch: cream cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, peanut/almond butter, and sometimes yogurt (which I make from raw milk at other times as well).
What is one junk food or processed food your family still eats?
Pizza … as a rare treat.
What is the worst thing your family’s eaten in the last few months? Why?
Hubs and I went to a resort in Mexico in May, and that was by far the worst food we have eaten all year. We felt like we were eating large quantities of food with no nutritional value and then were still hungry! It took a solid week to get our bodies back to normal.
What’s one area where you won’t compromise, no matter why? Why?
Ground beef. After seeing Food, Inc. and doing further research, I refuse to buy commercially processed ground beef. Organic grass-fed beef is what we eat instead!
What’s your best tip for eating real food in the real world?
Educate yourself! There is so much information available in books, on the internet, and other various forms of media – take the time to do your research and make an educated and informed decision! Be sure to check out our new website www.modernalternativekitchen.com!
