Simply Divine Cocoa Body Butter {Guest Post}

This is a guest post by Amanda of Natural Living Mamma.  In the months of March and April, we are hosting several guest posts so that MAM can enjoy her new baby.

We all want smooth supple skin without the chemical junk you find in stores, but those natural body butters at the farmers market are expensive! Making your own body butter is a breeze with these simple step by step instructions.

This butter is simply elegant smelling delightfully of cocoa and leaving the skin smooth, supple, and radiant. Using cocoa butter instead of shea and excluding essential oils this body butter is great for those with sensitive skin, health problems, and chemical sensitivities.

Ingredients:

  • 1 C Coca Butter
  • ½ C Coconut Oil
  • ½ C Herb infused olive oil (I like chamomile and calendula) or any other liquid carrier oil

Instructions

  1. Melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil together using the double boiler method in a large Pyrex bowl.
  2. Once they are completely melted remove from heat and place in the bowl you will be using to mix your body butter. This can be the bowl to your mixer or they can stay in the large pyrex bowl if you are using a hand mixer.
  3. Add olive oil and let set until cool and just starting to solidify. In the winter letting it set out side is the fastest way for it to cool down. If you are using a hand mixer with a whisk like I am do not let it solidify completely. Start to mix as soon as a layer forms on the side of the bowl. If using a stand mixer or hand beaters you can wait until it is cooled almost solid.
  4. Beet the oil mixture until it turns white and forms soft peaks.
  5. Put the butter into a container of your choice and enjoy the luxurious moisturizing power of this great body butter!

This recipe makes enough to fill about 2 8oz containers.

If you would like to get some inspiration about essential oils to put in this recipe check out my post “Essential Oils for Skin Care” and customize this recipe to meet your specific needs.

Super Simple DIY Face & Body Lotion (only 2 ingredients!)

By Joanna Rodriguez, Contributing Writer

This is one of those things that is so simple I almost feel silly sharing it with you.

But it’s also too good to keep to myself.

Has this never-ending winter left your skin dry and itchy? Have you been reaching for your body and face lotions constantly, hoping to replenish the moisture in your depleted skin?

Well, I would have, except I don’t buy lotion anymore. It’s all full of junk that I don’t want on my skin, and the more “natural” brands are either not really very natural or out of my price range or don’t work very well. So what’s a girl to do?

I’ve used straight coconut oil on my skin before, but then I found out that it can actually be drying to the skin, and that’s not what I wanted! So I turned to two of my favorite body care ingredients: almond oil and aloe vera gel.

Almond Oil, according to Mountain Rose Herbs, “is great for all skin types as an acting emollient and is best known for its ability to soften, soothe, and re-condition the skin.” In my experience it is absorbed quickly and easily into the skin, moisturizing effectively without being heavy or greasy.

Anyone who has ever put aloe vera gel on sunburn knows how soothing it can be to the skin.  It is also good for minimizing wrinkles, is anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial, is absorbed easily into the skin, and can lessen the appearance of stretch marks! Make sure you buy a product that is just pure aloe vera gel with minimal added ingredients, like this one.

Mixing together these two ingredients results in a lotion that is moisturizing enough for the whole body, light enough for the face, with serious replenishing and anti-itch capabilities! And you can make it yourself in about one minute! Here’s how:

Super Simple DIY Face & Body Lotion

Ingredients:

  • Almond Oil
  • Aloe Vera Gel

Supplies:

  • A small bottle with a flip top (can be found in your grocery store’s travel toiletry section or purchased online)

Directions:

  • Combine equal parts almond oil and aloe vera gel in the small flip-top bottle.
  • Shake gently to combine.
  • Store out of direct sunlight.

Can you believe how easy that was? I’m in love.

Since we didn’t create an emulsion, you can see how the oil and aloe sort of stay separate and look like bubbles. Don’t worry, as long as you shake it before each use, they blend together perfectly on your skin. Free free to alter the proportions: more aloe will result in a thinner, lighter lotion.

What do you use for face and body lotion? Have you ever made your own?

Monday Health & Wellness: Skin-Soothing Post-Sun Lotion

It is always my goal to try to improve our bodies’ ability to do what they already do — or should do.  I like to support natural functions much more than I like to interfere with them, even using natural medicines.

Now that spring is here and we’re having more sunny days, getting vitamin D into my kids naturally — via sun — is high on my priority list.  We head outside for at least a short time everyday, usually around 1 PM (“solar noon,” when the sun is highest in the sky and the most UVB rays, the ones that produce vitamin D, are present).  That’s a good thing.  Not bathing them with soap (which removes the skin’s natural oils, in which the vitamin D is produced and must be absorbed) is also good.

But, there’s more I can do.  We need magnesium for optimal vitamin D production, absorption, and usage.  Most of us are deficient in magnesium, because our soils are depleted.  Plus, many of us don’t eat a lot of foods that are rich in magnesium ( beans, whole grains, nuts).  Magnesium is also used up fairly quickly, especially in times of stress.  If you’ve been tested for vitamin D deficiency, and are deficient even though you get a lot of sun and/or take supplements, magnesium may be a key issue.

My solution was to create a lotion that contains magnesium, but also contains specific skin-soothing, easily absorbed ingredients.  It will keep skin soft, help prevent any skin damage (it’s the UVA rays that cause the long-term damage) and hopefully increase vitamin D absorption.  I’ve only just started using it, so I don’t know yet — but I’m hoping to get the kids’ vitamin D levels tested before and after (or at least after — I’m sure they won’t like the needles) to see if this appears to help!  At any rate, it’s a very nice, light lotion for summer and should soothe any sore or dry skin.

I plan to put it on before sun exposure, but after is also great.  However you wish to use it.  Makes 16 oz.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 c. magnesium oil (3/4 c. water and 3/4 c. cup magnesium chloride flakes, approximately)
  • 1/4 c. aloe vera gel
  • 1 oz. evening primrose oil (1/8 c. or 2 tbsp.)
  • 1 1/2 oz. avocado oil (3 tbsp.)
  • 1 1/2 oz. sweet almond oil (3 tbsp.)
  • 1/2 c. shea butter
  • 3 tbsp. beeswax
  • 15 – 20 drops essential oil, if desired

Directions:

First, you need to make the magnesium oil.  Pour the water into a small saucepan and heat until very warm — it does not need to boil.

Add the magnesium chloride flakes.  I assume that you could use Epsom salts or another form of magnesium if you prefer, but it may not be as well absorbed and I have not tried it.

Stir this to combine, then add the amount you need to a blender.  I’m making a double batch here, so I actually have 1 1/2 cups.

Then, measure out your other oils.  I used one of the pint-sized glass mason jars (in which I put the finished lotion) to measure out my oils.

Add your aloe vera gel.

Melt your shea butter and beeswax together.

Pour everything into the blender and turn it on (add your essential oils now if you wish; I didn’t use any.  Some essential oils can increase photosensitivity, or sensitivity to the sun, and since we were planning to use it in the sun I didn’t want to risk it).  It will start out being rather yellow in color — this means it is still lightly blended oils and water.

Turn the blender higher.  Watch the mixture turn whiter, and thicker.  This means an emulsion has formed and your lotion is done.  Pour into prepared jars (I used pint-sized mason jars)

Now, I have to warn you.  I tried to blend mine at first when the melted oils were very hot and everything else was more like room temperature.  It turned white, I poured it into jars, and it immediately separated.  I poured it back into the blender, allowed it to cool slightly, then whipped it at a higher speed.  That time it worked beautifully, and after several days hasn’t separated at all.  If it separates at first, turn the blender back on higher.  This will cool it and also create the right emulsion.  It will work…have patience.

Whipped Lavender Orange Aftershave Balm

By Nina, Contributing Writer

I remember begging my mom to let me shave my legs. I was in the 6th grade and felt embarrassed whenever I wore shorts around my friends. They always had silky-smooth legs, a stark contrast to my hairy ones, which were ever-so-noticable thanks to the dark hair caused by my Latina genes.

My mom told me no, saying that I would just scar up my legs if I did. My 6th-grade response? “I don’t care! I can’t wait to scar up my legs because they won’t be hairy anymore!” I never should have said that, because scar my legs I did.

When she finally gave in (I’m a little … persistent), she let me figure it out on my own. It didn’t take long before I realized that I would need shaving cream and some kind of lotion/aftershave to prevent the horrendous razor burn and the pain from having too-dry skin. I also learned that dull razors = lots of cuts and that sharp razors = not as many cuts (I’m accident-prone).

Since then, I’ve learned that a lot of my skin issues were actually caused by food intolerances. Since addressing those, shaving my legs is more pain-in-the-rear than painful.

Now, when I shave, I use bar soap (I made a healing herbal castile soap that feels wonderful) for lather. My legs no longer burn afterward and my skin just feels a little dry. Really, if I didn’t want to, I don’t think I’d need to apply any kind of aftershave moisturizer.

But then I wouldn’t get to use this whipped aftershave balm, so I just go ahead and tell myself that I still need a little something to moisturize my legs after shaving. :)

This beautiful aftershave blend soothes and moisturizes post-shave skin by combining shea butter and coconut oil. Separately, these two ingredients are very moisturizing and the shea butter makes your skin feel very soft. Together, they make a delightful moisturizing balm that soaks into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. The essential oils add a lovely non-skin-irritating scent.

Ingredients needed:

Directions:

Whip by hand or in a stand mixer to a delicious consistency. Seriously, it will look like frosting. Don’t eat it. You need to save some to put on your face/legs. Store in a jar in a cool place. Let me emphasize cool here, as it will melt but looks just like butter when solid.

To apply, start by scooping out a small amount and let it warm a little in your hand. A little bit goes a long way, so experiment with how much you need.

What are your shaving must-haves?

Homemade Bisquick

By Danielle, Contributing Writer

One of my favorite things to do is figure out how to make something from scratch that you normally buy in a box.  As a working mama I need the convenience of quick meals and sides but I don’t want to compromise on health.

Enter homemade Bisquick.

Bisquick is great for making dinner biscuits, dessert shortbreads and even pancakes. The problem is the extra, nonessential ingredients in box of Bisquick don’t mesh with a real food or natural foods diet.

So I decided to make my own.

Here’s how you can too:

Homemade Bisquick

  • 6 Cups Spelt or Whole Wheat Flour
  • 3 Tablespoons Aluminum Free Baking Powder
  • 2 Tablespoons Sucanat, Rapadura or other natural granulate sugar (Optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon REAL or Celtic Salt
  • 1 Cup Butter, cubed

First, sift your flour, salt and baking powder in a large bowl to remove lumps. If you’re using fresh ground you can skip this step and just stir the flour, salt and baking powder together. Next, using a pastry blender incorporate the cubed butter until the mixture resembles small crumbs.

Store the mixture in the refrigerator or freezer in an air-tight container and use whenever you find an awesome recipe that calls for Bisquick.

Speaking of recipes, do you have an old favorite that calls for Bisquick?  Share in the comments.
