About

Welcome to Modern Alternative Mama!

This is a blog dedicated to real food, natural health, Biblical Christianity (everything I write is through a Biblical worldview), natural parenting, and even my random thoughts. :)

You’ll find a lot of recipes and cookbooks here, because developing recipes has always been a passion of mine.  From the time I was 7 or 8 and tall enough to reach the stove, I was trying to cook.  I started out making food from cans and boxes.  By the time I was 19, I was sick of college cafeteria food and I started to teach myself to really cook.  I watched the Food Network obsessively and studied their recipes, notes on ingredients, and techniques.  I mimicked them and tried stuff.  My poor family had to eat my early experiments — not always winners!

By the time I was in my early 20s, I had found real food and cooking took on a totally new meaning to me.  I had to cook if I wanted to eat well!  I continued to study and try out techniques.  I conquered one “area” of cooking at a time (yes — all my sauces used to come out bland and flavorless, and all my cakes used to come out flat) until I had mastered cooking with recipes.  Then I set out on my own to combine my favorite ingredients and create recipes.  I started to succeed more and more often, and realized I could finally achieve my dream of writing my own cookbook.  Real Food Basics came out in October, 2010 and has since sold over 350 copies (as of October, 2011).  Currently we have four cookbooks out: Real Food Basics, Healthy Pregnancy Super Foods, Against the Grain, and Treat Yourself: Real Food Desserts.

Our plan is to continue to release cookbooks every 3 or 4 months, and to expand recipe offerings — tips, hints, tutorials, choosing ingredients, and much more.  We even have an awesome addition to the site coming in this area early next year — but shh, it’s still a secret. :)
